Instructions for converting (ripping) avi to mp4

Most movies on your computer that came from your camera will not play on an iPod because the file format is not right. Movies from my camera are .avi, iPod won’t touch (no pun intended) them. Others may be .mpeg or .wmv, but the iPod touch wants .mp4 files.

Unfortunately, you cannot just rename a file with the preferred extension because the contents are proprietary. Luckily, there are tools to convert files of one format (type) to another. We found a free one that seems to work great, it is called WM Converter and it may be all you need for video ripping / encoding / converting. Download here.

Instructions

These instructions will get you pointed in the right direction, and with a good quality source file, the output looks and sounds great on the iPod touch we tested. WM Converter can also format files for playing on the Zune, 3GP Mobile phones, mp3 and more. After you have downloaded and installed WM Converter you can start the program and continue here. Note: at the time of this writing (6/01/2009) there was no spyware or other software included with the WM Converter 2.0 install!

Conversion

If WM Converter is installed and running it is time to start converting your movies so they will play on your iPod. You can do one movie at a time or multiple. Remember to use a high quality source file to get best results from the conversion since converters cannot make a low quality video look better.
