Ultrasonic humidifier experience

Ultrasonic Humidifier

Buying filters for the wick type humidifiers gets expensive so this winter I spent a little bit more up front and got an ultrasonic humidifier. Couldn’t be happier except for the strange white dust problem, which ended up being no big deal.. after cleaning it up and finding a low cost solution.

The white dust saga.. After I got the Holmes HM495 and filled it up with tap water I was feeling pretty smart, no filter, quiet operation, cool mist and it definitely made a couple adjoining smaller rooms more comfortable after running one tank through. And in a small room, approx. 12x12, it can easily get the humidity up around 40%. But by the second day and second tank I noticed in the morning sun, (shinning in nicely) there was more dust than normal in the room. Not actually dust, more like a smoky haze. And there was a fine white dust on everything.. especially the tv screen. I did a quick internet search and sure enough.. it was from the humidifier. I was ready to bring it back, but started thinking about the white deposits left on faucets tubs and anywhere the local city water evaporates from. So I went to my local Kinetico with jugs in hand to give this thing another try with some filtered water. Bingo, no more white dust using the filtered water.

Final Word

I haven’t done the math to see if 25 cent per gallon filtered water is cheaper than buying filters, but I would guess it is a wash. The clean, quiet operation and lack of a tank filled with scale is what makes me a convert.. ultrasonic all the way!
